COVID-19 Relief Fund
Your regional United Ways are UNITED in a collective response to the pandemic. The Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia Relief Fund will be used to support community organizations who are working to meet the needs of individuals affected by COVID-19 in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
Both immediate and long-term, these efforts will focus response efforts on vulnerable populations, including children, families, and the ALICE population. ALICE, an acronym coined by United Way that stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed represents men, women, and families who work hard and earn more than the official Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living.
If you’d like to make a gift, you can text NETNSWVARelief to 41444.

MY ORGANIZATION IS INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR GRANT RESOURCES FROM THIS FUND. CAN WE BE CONSIDERED?
We understand the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting nonprofits in many ways, including increased demand for their services, lost revenue due to closures and cancelations, as well as other challenges. We are working to ensure that the grants awarded meet the greatest needs in communities impacted by COVID-19. We are forming an advisory council to guide the strategy for the disbursement of these funds to community organizations working to meet the needs of individuals affected by the pandemic.
I’M AN INDIVIDUAL WHO’S BEEN AFFECTED BY COVID-19. CAN THIS FUND HELP ME?
We understand many individuals and families have been affected by the outbreak already and more will continue to be affected. We are working to move resources to community-based organizations that are directly supporting residents and families who are most affected by emerging health, economic, and social impacts.
While the Fund is not able to provide grants to individuals, funding will be provided to community-based organizations that have experience and history of providing people and families with services and support. As we begin to award grants, we will post them here. If you are looking for resources now, please call 211.
I WANT TO DONATE. CAN I RESTRICT MY FUNDING TO A PRIORITIZED GRANTEE?
To ensure we move resources as efficiently as possible and provide relief to communities most impacted, we are not considering restricted donations at this time. The COVID-19 Relief Fund was created to provide a coordinated response to our region’s immediate needs. However, if you want your funds to go to a specific county you can donate directly to the United Way that serves your community via the links on our websites.
SHOULD I GIVE TO THIS FUND INSTEAD OF MAKING OTHER DONATIONS?
This Fund was not created to be the only vehicle for getting needed resources into the community, but to help focus a regional response. This is a critical time for so many, including the non-profit organizations that have benefited from your giving in the past, as well as those organizations that had to cancel their annual fundraising events or depend heavily on public gatherings. Please continue to give to organizations you regularly support, and those that need your help at this crucial time. Now is the time to double down for our community.
IS THERE A GEOGRAPHIC AREA OF FOCUS FOR THE FUND?
The COVID-19 Relief Fund will prioritize community-based organizations serving Northeast Tennessee (NETN) and Southwest Virginia (SWVA). We are doing this with a recognition that many local nonprofits serve workers and residents in our neighboring counties. We are being flexible with our funds to support needs throughout the multiple county region.
WHEN WILL YOU SHARE WHO YOU FUND?
The first round of investments will be determined by the donations received in the coming weeks and we will publish the list of selected grantees, along with short descriptions of the services and support they are providing. We hope that this will help the community navigate available resources.
IS MY GIFT TO THE COVID-19 RELIEF FUND TAX DEDUCTIBLE?
Gifts are tax deductible. Consult your tax professional for what this means to you.
WILL MY GIFT TO THE COVID-19 RELIEF FUND REMAIN LOCAL?
Yes, all money donated to support the COVID-19 Relief Fund will be used to support community organizations right here in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia to help meet the needs of individuals affected by the pandemic.
WILL THERE BE AN ADMINISTRATIVE RATE OR FUNDRAISING FEE FOR GIFTS TO THE COVID-19 RELIEF FUND?
United Way has secured funding to help support the administrative and fundraising costs associated with this emergency response campaign. 100% of your donation will be to support response efforts in our region.
