What do a teenager, an attorney and a mental health counselor have in common? An Eagle Scout project, that’s what! Thomas Young, a senior from Abingdon High School and a Life Scout from Troop 222  recently completed his Eagle Scout project at United Way of Southwest Virginia. What might appear to be a simple landscaping job was anything but!

Thomas first approached United Way back in September about his Eagle Scout project and brainstormed with CEO, Travis Staton about potential projects. The beautification of the grounds has been an ongoing challenge for both staff and the many volunteers who have worked on the beds surrounding the office building. The decision was made to have the beds transformed into a more manageable and attractive setting.

In preparation for the project, Thomas first had to identify gas, water and electric systems on the property. He solicited donations and recruited volunteers to assist with the project. His leadership skills were tested, his organizational skills were refined and his communication skills put to the test. He excelled in all.

A big “shout out” to Thomas and his crew of volunteers, as well as the Boulder Look Stone Company who donated materials for the project. United Way staff, tenants, visitors, funders, volunteers and the town of Abingdon appreciate your hard work and dedication to your Eagle Scout project in making our space and the town more attractive and inviting to visitors.
